Boycott Styrofoam
A few days ago, I talked to our Principal about not using styrofoam cups and plates in our school lunch room. I am trying to make it so we can get everyone to help the environment. I also talked to our school’s Director of School Nutrition whose duty it is to help the school’s lunches be healthy and safe. Right now, our school uses styrofoam trays. She wanted to use cardboard “boats” to hold our food instead, but I did not like that idea. I told them how no trash in general should be our goal. They agreed! I also talked to them about not using styrofoam cups. They said the teachers need to bring their own cup. That is where I came in. I told them that I made a sign that I can put on the door where the teachers get their drinks. The sign said to boycott styrofoam cups. I hope the teachers look up and see that sign. They even told me to make a speech to say to the teachers. This is my speech.
Hi, my name is Hannah. I am in 3rd grade. Some of you know me; some of you do not. But I love the environment so that is why I am here. I became interested in the environment when I was four. I went to this place at Jekyll Island, Georgia. It was named the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. For the first time, I saw that this world is not perfect. The beautiful sea turtles are getting hurt by me and you. There is one way we can save them. Stop dumping things that can be recycled. Were does our trash go? The answer is sometimes our oceans. Some people say that trash just goes and stays in our landfills. Well people who say that are wrong. Actually there is no “away”. These animals that live in the oceans will eat our trash. Other animals on land or in the sky get hurt by us polluting too. The animals that live in the sky can not breathe in the air that comes out of factories. The land animals do the same thing as ocean animals. The animals eat our garbage and maybe will die. So I would like you to start using reusable cups to help our oceans. I hope you leave here today wanting to not use styrfoam cups and to help more with the environment.
I thank my Principal and our school’s Director of Nutrition for hearing about my concern and doing something about it.
I hope now everyone will help save the environment.
Great blog and speech, Hannah! I’m glad that you are doing so much for the environment! We use our reusable turtle bag along with other reusable bags on shopping trips. We have a number of different recycling bins for glass, paper, aluminum, and metal. I know that your efforts will meaningful to everyone you speak to! Keep up the great work!!

Thanks! I am going to continue to help the environment.
Hannah 🙂
