E-Science Club Update

My school’s Recycling Club was renamed the Environmental Science (E-Science) Club this year. Since September, we have been working on an experiment with composting. First, we took a container with three sections and put a corn starch spoon and a plastic spoon in one section. This is to test whether corn starch and plastic spoons would break down. So far, we haven’t observed changes with either one. In the second section, we placed newspaper, and in the last section, we placed grass clippings, strawberries that went bad, and an old banana peel. We filled each section to the top with soil and kept it watered down. All of these sections were in a race to see which one would break down faster – if at all.

Adding food waste to Section 3 of our composter.
This is a display our teacher made to show others what we were doing.

Here, we are taking temperature and recording our observations on our data sheet.

After months of decomposing, it was time to make energy! We decided to use the compost from the third section because it was decomposing the fastest and had the highest temperature. We used a MudWatt and placed all the compost in it. After several days, it started blinking. That means it was making energy! Check it out!

Thank you for reading and watching!
