Earth Day Craft

Were you just sitting around wondering what you could do for Earth Day? Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year, but you can do this sunflower craft any time in the spring when the danger of frost has passed.

Supplies:

  • 5 gallon bucket (an old one with cracks or holes would be perfect!)
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Potting soil
  • Paint and paint brushes (optional)
  • Newspaper or cardboard (if you are painting)
  • Drill

If you would like to paint your bucket, place newspaper or cardboard under your bucket and then decorate. Once it is dry, you must poke small holes in it (I did it with a drill) for drainage. Place your bucket in an area where the plants can get lots of sun. Then you may fill it with potting soil. Next, take your sunflower seeds and plant up to 3 in your bucket, each 1 inch deep into the soil (about the size of your thumbnail). Then, cover them and water. Make sure to water it everyday unless it rains. Below are some pictures of my bucket and how big my plants are so far.

*Warning this may get messy, so do it outside!*

This is a fun activity and easy to do! You will have a great time watching your sunflowers grow, plus you will be helping pollinators! If you like science and want to learn more about helping pollinators, you can even take part in The Great Sunflower Project.
