Read-a-thon Book 1 Review: “The Windward Road”

I had the pleasure of reading Archie Carr’s The Windward Road for the first book of my Trash for Turtles Read-a-thon. It was a fantastically informational novel. Dr. Carr describes his journey in the Caribbean as he investigates sea turtles. With the help of the natives, Dr. Carr travels to many islands, and he learns all about the Kemp’s Ridley and Leatherback sea turtles. It is fascinating to see the local people’s relationship with the turtles and the environment around them. Not to go without mention, Dr. Carr’s knowledge of the species of plants and animals along the “windward road” is incomparable to others. Even in this early stage of conservation (more than 50 years ago) there was a surprising bit of information on the sea turtles, but so little was known about the Kemp’s Ridley. It just took some great perseverance from one man to truly understand these species and conserve them.

This is was such a good novel, and I recommend it to anyone interested in sea turtle conservation. Personally, I recommend this for older age groups due to the high vocabulary and length of paragraphs, but anyone can read it!

I want to give a special shout out to everyone who sponsored this book. Together, we raised a total of $258 this month for the Caretta Research Project! Everyone who sponsored this book was given the opportunity to enter a drawing for a free Trash for Turtles t-shirt or bracelet, and the opportunity to choose a local library where I will donate a copy of this book for others to read. And our first winner is…

If you didn’t win but would like to buy a t-shirt ($10) or bracelet ($6), you can purchase them directly on my fundraising page. All sale proceeds through May 1, 2021 will also go to the Caretta Research Project.

Or try your luck again with our next read-a-thon which will take place in February! More information on that can be found here.

Happy reading and thank you for being turtley awesome! 🙂
