Read-a-thon Book #5 Review: Fire in the Turtle House
This month, I had the pleasure of emerging myself into Fire in the Turtle House by Osha Gray Davidson. This novel didn’t fail to keep me on my toes!
In the beginning, Davidson introduces the reader to a mysterious disease called fibropapillomatosis (FP for short) in the green sea turtles of Hawaii. This disease attacks sea turtles through tumor bulges across their body. It is extremely fatal whether through causing direct attacking of vital organs or starvation from blinding a turtle’s eyesight. After research, it was found that this disease is in all species of turtles but predominantly greens. Throughout this book, we witness Davidson’s interaction with the disease and the fight to learn more about it before it’s too late.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Sometimes with informational texts, it can get boring over time, but this was not the case for this book. Davidson tells true stories about his interactions while also adding information. It was like reading an adventure novel, but it was a true story! The reviews matched this book quite well- a 5 star for sure! I recommend this book to anyone interested in sea turtles, epidemiology, or just informational texts.
Thank you to everyone who sponsored this month’s Read-a-thon! Thanks to all of the donations, I have raised more than $10,000 over the 9 seasons of my project! It is astonishing to me that I have reached this amazing milestone. It was not without the help of all of you! I’m so thrilled!
Everyone who sponsored this book was given the opportunity to enter a drawing for a free Trash for Turtles t-shirt or bracelet, and the opportunity to choose a local library where I will donate a copy of this book for others to read. And this month’s winner is…
Annnnnnnnnd…. It’s not over yet! Any money donated from here on out is just more money to the Caretta Research Project! They need all the help they can get for the upcoming sea turtle season. Book #6 is All the Way to the Ocean by Joel Harper.
Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much. This means so much to me and all the great organizations I’ve raised money for. After 8 years (9 seasons) of doing this project, I can really say, we’ve made a difference!
I’m glad you enjoyed the book! Congratulations on $10,000 raised!
Thank you so much!
