Trash For Turtles
From 2013 to 2021, I raised money for organizations that focus on marine debris, shark research, and sea turtle conservation. With these efforts, I have contributed to programs for the:
- Caretta Research Project
- Georgia Sea Turtle Center
- Georgia DNR’s Sapelo Island Sea Turtle Survey
- Jacksonville University’s Georgia Shark Project
- Satilla River Water Partnership
- St Simons Island Sea Turtle Project
I also did many things to raise awareness about pollution of our waterways, including cleanups, talks, and other community actions. Altogether, I called my project “Trash for Turtles.” During the 9 seasons of this project, my family and I recycled 2,974 lbs – or approximately 95,000 – aluminum cans. We did this by participating in 62 roadway and river cleanups, as well as encouraging local community members to collect and recycle cans. We also created sea turtle artwork that was featured on note cards, reusable grocery bags, and t-shirts. With the help of my family and community, I have been able to contribute over $10,500 to these organizations.
