My First Facebook Live Event & More!

This past Saturday, I put on my first Facebook Live event with the help of Mrs. Stephanie Chewning at One Hundred Miles. It was part of their “Families in Nature” series. I was able to present my Trash for Turtles project in a new (and safe!) way and fulfill my YOCS mini-grant requirements. I gave out another two of my “Love-Protect-Save” t-shirts at the event leading to a total of ten shirts in all. This, while at the same time also supporting the sea turtle work being done by the Caretta Research Project! (If you didn’t get one of these free shirts, you can still purchase one on my website here, and all proceeds will go towards my 2021 Trash for Turtles project!)

When I applied for this grant, my goal was to talk to at least three groups and reach at least 50 people. With both in-person and virtual events, I was able to reach my goal – and more! I had two in-person events, one recorded video event, and one livestream event, reaching at least 99 people in all! I hope that my efforts will plant a seed in the people – especially kids – that I have met along this journey, that through them others will be moved to preserve and protect our oceans and marine organisms for years to come.

It’s also been really fascinating to give these presentations in the middle of a pandemic. I’ve learned so many new ways to talk to people about my Trash for Turtles project and environmental conservation. Many of these people, including college students and some that live far away from me, would not have learned about my project without this new technology. Even though this year didn’t really go as planned, I am proud to say I made the best of it, and I hope you did too!

…And none of this would have been possible without the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit. When I was able to go last year, I learned so much and was given this grant as well. On December 5th, the 2020 Youth Ocean Conservation Summit will be held virtually. I encourage you to join. It is free to attend and it is a great way to learn new things. Well, that’s about all for this month. I hope you have a fantastic (and safe!) Thanksgiving. Until next month, Hannah-out! 🙂

This project is funded through a mini-grant from the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit. The Youth Ocean Conservation Summit empowers young conservation leaders with the knowledge, tools, and funds to launch solutions-oriented ocean conservation projects around the world.
