Thankful for Our Georgia Coast

Georgia is home to diverse ecosystems with hundreds of species of birds, fish, and mammals. This includes the hundred-mile coastline that many marine species use for at least part of their lives. From the salt marshes of the barrier islands to the tidal waters of the Atlantic, Georgia’s coastal ecosystems are vital to the survival of many species. Unfortunately, our actions have caused the decline of some of these species due to things such as overfishing, pollution, and boat strikes – even to the point of possible extinction like the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. In order to preserve this and other species, we must continue to advocate for conservation and raise awareness of the dangers they face.

Our Georgia Coast is a campaign led by One Hundred Miles to educate through film the importance of preserving our coastlines. Currently on the website are two films where different conservationists discuss the diversity of Georgia’s coast and the importance of protecting it. You can view these films on their website here. You might notice a familiar face, Mark Dodd, a sea turtle biologist and conservationist that I have worked with in the past. It’s so great to see him and all of the amazing people in the state highlighted!

Our Georgia Coast is an ongoing project so make sure to keep updated with the newest films (wink wink)! As we celebrate this season of Thanksgiving, I am so thankful for such a beautiful, diverse place to live.
